[ O R I O R I ] :: folding woven textile Exploring visual transformation and form transformation in foldable origami structures through jacquard weaving
Year 2023

The word origami derives from the Japanese words ori [to fold] and kami [paper]. Ori additionally describes a woven cloth, thereof the title:

[ ORIORI ] :: folding woven textile

In the field of contemporary weaving, there is a great interest in challenging the dimensionality of woven textiles, by embedding form-transformative mechanisms directly in the interlacement of warp and weft within the loom. Hereby, enabling a transformation of a two-dimensional textile into a three-dimensional textile construction. The research of three-dimensional weaving is utilizing the technological development in jacquard weaving and material innovation.

Taking a starting point in the ancient practice of origami, the research of Oriori aims to explore the forming potential of three-dimensional woven origami structures by utilizing contemporary weaving technologies. Furthermore, the research aims to investigate how visual transformability properties can be embedded in the three-dimensional constructions, by systematically working with contrasting elements within the form-related components of shape, texture, color, pattern, and scale in order to enhance the experience of transformation.

The research is set within experimental design research and provides a method to generate fully-woven three-dimensional surface structures and self-supporting textile forms, by utilizing origami structures as a fundamental construction principle. The outcome is showcasing a series of dynamic three-dimensional woven constructions in which a variety of contrasting form elements provide dynamic visual transformation activated by either movement around the forms or manipulation of the forms themselves.

By suggesting a new approach to the embedment of form-transformative mechanisms in woven textiles, this research contributes to the field of three-dimensional weaving. Furthermore, the research suggests a potential for embedded visual transformability directly linked to the three-dimensional properties, hereby challenging the traditional notion of textiles being characterized by two-dimensionality and static visual qualities. As the transformative woven constructions are activated based on bodily interaction, the research additionally suggests a potential in the intersection of three-dimensional weaving and interaction design.
