Exchange student Chantal and campus view

Chantal found home abroad

What made you decide to study at the University of Borås for your exchange semester?

"I wanted to go to the Nordic countries because you hear so many good things about them, and I was accepted to Sweden. I had heard great things about Sweden’s social system - that although Swedes might be seen as introverted, they are also very open and friendly to foreigners. That was an important factor for me when choosing to go abroad as an exchange student.

I’m studying Business but have an interest in fashion as well, and Borås provided a great combination of both, which is why I wanted to come here. I’m really enjoying the mix."

How does studying here compare to your home institution?

"I would say the system here is better, at least for me. In Germany, I take five to six courses throughout the semester, and the schedule is quite strict and packed. I feel like it’s hard to fully understand everything because there is so much at once.

Here, with only two courses taught at the same time, I feel like I have more time to focus on my studies. There are a lot of group projects and paper submissions, along with active discussions with both lecturers and classmates. Even though I might spend less time sitting down and studying, I feel like I truly learn and understand how to apply the theories."

How would you describe the University of Borås?

“The campus is beautiful and widespread. When the weather is good and everything is green, it’s a great experience. I enjoy the cafés at the university – I go there to study and enjoy the atmosphere.

The teachers are really nice. Every teacher speaks English and will repeat things in a simpler way if someone hasn’t understood. It allows us as exchange students to contribute to the class. I also feel that the university is very digitally oriented, perhaps because of its strong focus on sustainability - everything is submitted online.

You can see that fashion is taught here because all the students are dressed so well. It’s nice, and you get inspired to express your own individuality. I feel like everyone is welcome.”

Which course has been your favourite so far?

“I really liked the Swedish Language and Culture course. It was so fun and interactive! I just wanted to go there, learn and participate.

Moreover, I enjoyed Management and Aesthetics in Fashion Communication as it broadened my perspective on business. It felt very fashion-oriented while still being a business course. If you want to go into marketing, you must be aware of trends and forecasting, which I learned a lot about in this course.”

Why should someone study Business Administration at University of Borås?

“There are lots of classes that will give you new perspectives. I’m used to Business Administration being taught in a more traditional manner, but here, the approach is different. It explores how Business Administration connects to areas such as fashion, sustainability and marketing.

Personally, it has opened my mind to how diverse and creative the business field can be. My home university is in a city known for the automotive industry, which isn’t very creative for me. I always wanted to do something in fashion but didn’t understand how, and now I do."

How do you spend your time outside of school?

"I explore the city with my friends and hang out at cafés. Even though Borås is a small city, there are lots of things to do. If you take the time, you’ll find cool and unique places. For example, I recently discovered an arcade where my friends and I go to play games.

When the weather is good, it’s nice to spend time outside. The nature around here is really beautiful."

What do you enjoy most about living in Borås?

"I would say the Swedish people because I’m not necessarily someone who always starts conversations, but once you talk to Swedes in a store, they are talkative and friendly, and you feel welcome. They really want you to enjoy your experience here. I feel like everyone here is calm and happy."

Do you have any tips for students considering an exchange in Borås?

"Obviously, I would say ‘Just apply’ because it’s going to be a good experience. Come here with an open mind and you’ll love it.”
