Reading, traditions and negotiations: Reading activities in Swedish classrooms 1967-1969

This project is designed to create new insights into and a new understanding of the Swedish reading culture of the 20th century. Through the analysis of a unique historical collection of sound and video recordings of a large number of primary school lessons from the late 1960’s the project will create a strong platform from which to discuss change in the reading practices of children today.

Metal extraction with focus on Zn from fly ash by means of using acid process waters

Every year over 5 000 000 ton of solid waste are combusted in Sweden. In addition to the production of heat and electricity, this also results in large quantities of ash. The bed ash, or slag, is used as construction material on landfills, while the fine fly ash is deposited. The reasons to this deposition are the content of potential hazardous metal compounds and easily leached chlorides. Several metals as for example Cu and Zn can be found in concentrations of the same level or even higher in the ash compared to metal ores used for mining. Thus, there is a large interest to develop methods for metal extraction from ash.

Cell macroencapsulation for efficient bioprocesses

The overall goal of this project is to develop generally applicable procedures for production of chemicals from carbohydrate-containing raw materials using packed microbial cells at high local cells concentrations. The system should lead to higher productivity and increased robustness against microbial contamination, toxic chemicals, osmotic stress and high concentrations of raw materials, compared to traditional continuous bioreactors using freely suspended or immobilized cells.
