Welcome to Textiles in Contexts!
Looking forward to meeting and learning together. Our course will flow through five modules: An introduction, followed by modules associated with a large theme such as Origins, Aesthetic, Political Power, and Industrialism.
The course opens online course 2024-09-02 and runs through 2025-01-19. Except for some groups meetings you will arrange in small groups, we will work asychronistically, so you can log in to Canvas at your convenience.
Please log in when the course opens because there is a task due 9 September and another task due 16 September.
Most of the work (4.5 hp) is individual reading and writing, but we also have a group project (3 hp) that is listening and visualizing. We’ll make groups soon after the course starts.
I will provide all the sources (readings, etc.) except for this audio book: The Golden Thread: How Fabric Changed History by Kassia St. Klair (2019), which you’ll need to get yourself. (The book is available in print, but we’ll use the audio version.)
Here’s hoping that everyone will finish the course with a fresh understanding of how humans form fabrics and fabrics form humans.
Best,
David Goldsmith
PS: Think about a particular textile (cloth, garment, covering, etc.) that holds meaning for you. We’ll introduce ourselves with these fabrics in mind.

How to find your schedule
Schedule in KronoX
You can find your schedule, including locations, in the digital schedule tool KronoX. Please note that changes to the schedule can take place at short notice. Therefore, make a habit of checking the schedule in KronoX regularly.
The learning platform Canvas
On the New Student website, you can find a lot of good information, including about the learning platform, Canvas, which you get access to after you register and create your student account. It is on the learning platform that we post information about the courses and this is also where a lot of communication between teachers and students, as well as between students, takes place.
