Welcome to the "Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment" Course!

Welcome to the Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment course at the University of Borås! In this course, you will learn fundamental concepts of LCA and its role in sustainable development.

First Meeting

Our first virtual meeting is scheduled for 29 January, from 09:30 to 12:00 am, via Zoom. We'll dive into life cycle thinking and the course structure. Please note that while attendance in this and all subsequent lectures is optional, joining the lectures is advised to ensure a solid foundation for your learning journey in this course.

Reading List

Your main reference will be the course compendium, accessible in Canvas, complemented by additional materials and recommended readings. Key texts include "The Hitchhiker's Guide to LCA" by Baumann & Tillman and "Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): A Guide to Best Practice" by Klöpffer & Grahl, among others.

The majority of your course literature, including the main reference, the course compendium, will be available on Canvas.

Other Information

The course is structured around exercises with specified deadlines, culminating in an LCA project. All submissions and communications will be through Canvas and your student email. Remember, your active participation and timely submissions are key to your success in this course.

Note

The aim of this course is for students to develop the skills of life cycle thinking in environmental issues and to gain an understanding of the principles and structure of a life cycle assessment (LCA). The course covers the five stages of the LCA framework, namely goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment and interpretation. It also covers important concepts such as definition of the functional unit, identification and delimitation of the system boundaries, and allocation problems
